Chapter Fourteen

The smell of freshly brewed coffee awakened Jennifer. The moment of realization that she wasn’t in her own bed should have given rise to panic followed by shame that she’d thrown herself at a man she’d known for a couple of weeks. No panic, no shame. Just the pleasant tingles of awareness that she was in bed. Finn’s bed. She yawned and stretched. And if the smell was any indication, he made good coffee.

She threw off the covers. A navy terry cloth robe lay at the foot of the bed. She drew it over her shoulders. Obviously Finn’s, she rolled up the sleeves and belted it. The hem skimmed the floor. Nothing she could do about that but be careful not to trip over it.

She followed her nose to the kitchen, pausing in the entry. Finn stood at the stovetop, turning over scrambled eggs. Buttered toast graced the two plates on the counter. The mugs on the table steamed with the fragrant coffee. Finn turned the eggs out onto the plates, put the frying pan on another burner and turned off the stove.

The food looked good, but Finn looked better. Low-slung sweats rode his hips and he had on a fitted t-shirt that showed off his chest and arms. Strong arms that held her, thrilled her, made her feel safe.

Turning to take the plates to the table, he stopped when he saw her standing in the door. He put the plates down and approached. “Morning.” He gave her a sound kiss on the mouth. “That looks better on you. I’m glad I didn’t have to wake you.

“I’d have helped.”

He ushered her to the table. “No way. You looked so comfortable, I couldn’t wake you.” He paused as if uncertain. “Hell, I like seeing you there.”

She felt the flush on her cheeks and said, “I like being there.”

Heat flared in his eyes. He took a step. Stopped. “If I didn’t know we were both starving, I’d pick you up and take you back to our bed.”

“Why bother with the bed?” she challenged. It was as if Finn had freed her from her fear of intimacy. She felt strong, powerful. She knew how she affected him. And what he did to her.

He drew in a huge breath and expelled it. Taking his seat, he said, “You’re killing me, but I’ll remember what you said. Let’s eat.”

She smiled and sampled the coffee. Ambrosia, she should have called it. “I am hungry. This is quite a meal. Do you like to cook?”

“I do all right. I have my specialties.”

“Let me guess...barbequed ribs and grilled steaks.”

“I wouldn’t have taken you for a stereotyper.” He failed to hide his grin. “I make a killer lasagna followed closely by a Caesar salad with my award-winning secret ingredient.”

“Well, I’ll be the judge of that.”

“How about tonight?” He raised a forkful of eggs, but paused in mid-air, waiting.

“I have a meeting with the Kids Council,” she hedged. She wanted nothing more than to come back, but maybe she was moving too fast.
